A great way to get oriented to the city, board the motor coach with your tour guide to learn about Norfolk’s colorful 335 year history. See the many attractions within walking distance of your hotel such as old St. Paul’s Church, the Moses Myers House, MacArthur Memorial, the historic Freemason District, Nauticus: The National Maritime Center, the Battleship Wisconsin, the restored waterfront area, as well as many other points of interest. Downtown Norfolk has undergone a complete transformation in the last decade and features the beautifully renovated Town Point Park with the Armed Forces memorial, brand new $34milliion cruise terminal, waterfront condos and state of the art shopping area. Drive through Norfolk’s historic Ghent, see the lovely homes along The Hague. Continue on to Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world and home to the aircraft carriers, submarines and destroyers of the Atlantic Fleet. See the beautiful homes along Admiral’s Row which house the flag officers and were built to house the Jamestown Exposition of 1907. Lunch will be included on base at one of the officer clubs.
Next will be a visit to the Chrysler Museum of Art, named one of the top 20 art museums by The Wall Street Journal. Boasting works of art by Degas, Matisse, Picasso and Warhol, among many others, the campus also is home to a state of the art Glass Studio. Guests will enjoy a self-guided tour, including time to stroll the beautiful outdoor sculpture garden. Finish the excursion at Doumar’s, home of the world’s first ice cream cone machine. Abe Doumar created the ice cream cone at the World’s Fair of 1904 in St. Louis. It was so successful that he designed a four-iron waffle machine that he launched during the Jamestown Exposition of 1907. Today, the family business still bakes cones on the original cone machine. While at Doumar’s guests will be given an introduction and history and then enjoy a tasty ice cream cone treat before boarding the bus to return to the hotel.
